Aggregated and distributed modelling of snow cover for a high-latitude basin
نویسنده
چکیده
A distributed land-surface model is used to simulate the seasonal cycle of snow cover for a high-latitude basin. In comparison with the distributed model, a simulation using surface parameters and meteorological data averaged over the entire basin overestimates the peak snow accumulation and underestimates the duration of snow cover. Dividing the basin into a small number of elevation bands and performing separate simulations for each band greatly improves the results. The improvement is less marked if information on the elevation dependence of vegetation cover and meteorological conditions is not used. Distributed simulations with different models produce a wider range of results than distributed and aggregated simulations with the same model. D 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Distributed mapping of snow and glaciers for improved runo modelling
Runo in glacierized alpine basins results from both seasonal snow cover and glacier melt. In this paper we present a case study for an improved runo modelling of the basin Massa-Blatten, 196 km, 1447±4191 m a.s.l. Using high resolution satellite sensors, it is possible to separately map snow cover and glacier areas. From the satellite data we derive depletion curves of snow covered areas in s...

Variation of snow cover area (SCA) in small to large scale catchment can be studied using MODIS snow products on daily to montly time step since the year 2000. However, one of the major problems in applying the MODIS snow products is cloud obscuration which limits the utilization of these products. In the current study, variation of SCA was investigated in Karoun basin, western part of Iran, us...
متن کاملStatistical self-similarity of spatial variations of snow cover and its application for modelling snowmelt runoff generation in basins with a sparse snow measurement network
Abstract An analysis of snow cover measurement data in a number of physiographic regions and landscapes has shown that fields of snow cover characteristics exhibit statistical self-similarity property. This property is useful when, because of a sparse measurement network, the spatial variability of snow cover can be determined only for large enough basins. Small-scale variability of snow cover ...
متن کاملMapping of Snow Cover and Glaciers with High Resolution Remote Sensing Data for Improved Runoff Modelling
The study presents investigations of the runoff from snow and ice, carried out in the high alpine basin of the Rhône river at Sion (3371 km2, 491 -4634 m a.s.l.). Using satellite remote sensing data, features like the snow coverage in the whole basin, the gradually decreasing snow coverage on glaciers and the area of exposed ice have been mapped. The periodical monitoring of the basin is based ...
متن کاملRemote Sensing Based Retrieval of Snow Cover Properties Case Study (Shirkooh Mountain Yazd, Iran)
Snow cover area is one of the most important criteria to calculate snow melt runoff. This can have an effect on the biology of the plant and the environment of a region. Using the catchment basin physical characteristic to calculate snow cover area is a conventional method, though its accuracy is not good enough. Most of the useful methods in calculating snow cover area are based on satellite i...
